Ministeo vs AssoConnect: run the association or care for the people?

AssoConnect is one of the most widely used association management tools in France (French-language only), and many churches rely on it. Ministeo is pastoral care software. The two overlap on the member list — and diverge on almost everything else. Here is where the line falls, without caricature.

The gist in 20 seconds: AssoConnect runs the association — memberships, donations, tax receipts, accounting, website. Ministeo cares for the people — member profiles, confidential meeting notes, appointments, home groups, AI assistant. They are not two competitors that replace each other, but two tools that answer two different questions: "how are our finances doing?" and "who needs attention this week?"

Two tools, two questions

Most churches in France are legally associations: either an "association cultuelle" under the 1905 law (the French law on the separation of church and state, which created a status dedicated to religious worship) or a general-purpose non-profit under the 1901 law with a religious purpose. Like any association, they have memberships to track, donations to collect, tax receipts to issue and accounts to keep. That is exactly AssoConnect's territory, and it covers it well.

But a church is not just an association. The work that actually fills a pastor's week doesn't show up on any balance sheet: the person who hasn't come in three weeks, the family going through a bereavement, the new believer who needs to be welcomed into a group, last week's conversation you'll need to remember six months from now. That work calls for a different tool — and above all, a different confidentiality model.

The tipping point

Ask yourself a single question: "Would I be comfortable with the treasurer reading what I want to write down?" If the answer is no, you don't need association software — you need a tool where confidentiality is a technical guarantee, not an agreement between well-meaning people.

The difference that matters: the confidentiality model

In association software, member records are designed to be shared: the board, the treasurer and the secretary all have access — that's the whole point. Free-text fields let you write whatever you want, but nothing technically prevents another leader from reading it.

What a pastor hears in a one-on-one belongs in a different category. A confidence about a struggling marriage, an addiction, depression, a painful family situation: under the GDPR, these are special category data — sometimes health data (Article 9). Storing them in a "comments" field visible to the board is not just a legal risk; it breaks the trust that makes those conversations possible.

Ministeo treats this as an architectural constraint, not an option:

To go further on this topic, we have written a whole page: what can you really write in a pastoral meeting note?

What AssoConnect does that Ministeo doesn't

Let's be frank, because it's decisive: Ministeo does not handle donations, accounting, tax receipts or the church website. None of these modules are planned in the short term. If your number one problem is "how do we collect and account for donations", Ministeo is not the answer — AssoConnect or HelloAsso are.

Conversely, if your number one problem is "we're losing track of people", no accounting module will fix it.

Do you really have to choose? The most common setup

In practice, many churches run both, and it makes sense:

The association tool for…

  • memberships and dues;
  • online donations and tax receipts;
  • accounting and bank reconciliation;
  • the website and event ticketing.

Ministeo for…

  • the pastoral care of people, week after week;
  • confidential meeting notes;
  • prayer requests and home groups;
  • appointments and online slot booking;
  • the AI assistant: "who hasn't been contacted in a month?".

The only precaution is to avoid ongoing double entry: decide which tool is the source of truth for your list of people. Usually, the association tool remains the master for memberships, and Ministeo receives the list via CSV import at the start, then takes it from there for pastoral care.

Frequently asked questions

Is AssoConnect a good fit for a church?

Yes, for the association side: memberships, donations with tax receipts, accounting, website, ticketing. It is association management software, used by many religious associations in France. It simply isn't designed for the pastoral care of people: confidential meeting notes, prayer requests, home groups, following up with members you haven't heard from.

What is the difference between AssoConnect and Ministeo?

AssoConnect runs the association: money, memberships, administrative obligations. Ministeo cares for the people: member profiles, encrypted confidential meeting notes, appointments, home groups, with an AI assistant that queries the database in plain language. They don't answer the same question, and they work very well together.

Does Ministeo handle donations and accounting?

No, and deliberately so: Ministeo offers no donations module, no accounting and no tax receipts. If that is your number one need, AssoConnect or HelloAsso are better choices. Many churches keep their fundraising tool for the money and add Ministeo for caring for people.

Can you use both at the same time?

Yes, it's actually the most common setup: the association tool for donations and accounting, Ministeo for pastoral care. Ministeo's CSV import lets you bring in your existing member list in minutes, with no ongoing double entry.

Are pastoral notes protected in AssoConnect?

AssoConnect offers free-text fields and comments on member records, but no confidentiality model designed for pastoral confidentiality. At Ministeo, a note marked confidential is individually encrypted with AES-256-GCM and visible only to its author — including with respect to other leaders and the AI assistant.

Is Ministeo European and GDPR compliant?

Yes. Ministeo is published by Veloyia SASU (France), the database is hosted in France and all data stays in Europe. The assistant runs on Mistral AI, a French model. AssoConnect is also a French vendor hosting in Europe: on this criterion, both are good options compared with American solutions.
