Church mobile app: which one to choose in 2026?

Two very different products go by the same name. One broadcasts to the congregation; the other equips those who provide care. Before comparing features, you need to know which of the two you are looking for — otherwise you will install the best tool for the wrong problem.

The gist in 20 seconds: the term "church mobile app" covers two opposite products. The app for the congregation broadcasts (announcements, sermons, giving). The app for the pastoral team manages (members, notes, appointments). Choosing the wrong category is the most common mistake. Ministeo is an app for those who provide care: available on iPhone and Android.

Some suites offer both, often with one strong module and the other an afterthought. Look at which of the two is the core of the product.

Why mobile changes pastoral care (and not just convenience)

The problem with pastoral care is not storage, it is the moment of capture. Useful information exists after the service, in the car after a visit, on a doorstep. If it has to wait until you are back at the office with a computer open, it is already lost nine times out of ten.

That is why Ministeo was designed mobile first, and why some of its features only make sense on a phone:

Seven criteria for judging a church app

  1. A native app or a website in disguise? Many "apps" are just a shortcut to a website. A simple test: do notifications, the camera, biometrics and dictation really work?
  2. Biometric lock. Face ID or fingerprint on opening — essential as soon as pastoral notes are involved.
  3. Fast entry. How many taps between the home screen and a saved note? More than four, and nobody will use it on the go.
  4. Useful notifications. An appointment reminder, yes. A notification for every database event, no — they will end up switched off.
  5. Interface languages. In a multicultural congregation, a Portuguese- or Spanish-speaking leader should not have to work in a language that isn't theirs.
  6. Hosting and confidentiality. Where does the data go? Who can read the notes? We cover this topic in our guide GDPR and your church membership file.
  7. An emergency exit. A full CSV export available: an app you can't leave is a trap, whatever its price.

The Ministeo app in practice

What it does

  • complete member records, with a history of interactions;
  • counseling notes, including encrypted confidential notes visible only to their author;
  • voice dictation of notes and prayer requests, processed on the device;
  • calendar, visits, appointments and a public booking link;
  • conversational AI assistant (Mistral AI, a French model);
  • home groups, prayer requests, growth stages;
  • interface in French, English, Spanish and Portuguese;
  • Face ID lock.

What it doesn't do

  • no app for the congregation (announcements, podcasts);
  • no donation collection or tax receipts;
  • no accounting;
  • no volunteer scheduling yet: the module is in the works;
  • no worship management (songs, transposition, sheet music) — on this point, see our Ministeo vs Eliakim comparison;
  • no advanced offline mode yet;
  • iPhone and Android: the app is available on the App Store and Google Play, and the web app works from any mobile browser.
The three-week test

A pastoral care app isn't judged at installation, but after three weeks: are notes still being entered on a Tuesday? If the tool only gets opened on the day you prepare a meeting, it hasn't found its place in a pastor's real life — and no additional feature will change that.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an app for the pastoral team and an app for the congregation?

An app for the congregation broadcasts: announcements, sermons, podcasts, giving, events. An app for the pastoral team manages: member records, counseling notes, appointments, prayer requests. Both are called a "church app", but they serve neither the same audience nor the same purpose. Ministeo is the second kind.

Is Ministeo available on iPhone and Android?

The iOS app is available on the App Store, with Face ID protection. The Android version is available on Google Play, with the same account. The web app also works from any mobile browser.

Can you dictate your pastoral notes by voice?

Yes, and it is one of the reasons the mobile app exists: after a visit, dictating three sentences in the car takes fifteen seconds, whereas typing them on a keyboard would never happen. Dictation runs on the device itself, without the audio being sent to a server.

Is sensitive data protected on mobile?

Access to the app can be locked with Face ID or the device passcode. Notes marked confidential are encrypted with AES-256-GCM on the server side and are visible only to their author, on mobile as on the web.

Do you need a permanent internet connection?

The app needs a connection to sync data. An advanced offline mode is on the roadmap but is not available yet: for now, view and enter data where you have coverage.

Is a mobile app really useful for a small church?

That is actually where it changes the most: in a small church, pastoral care rests on one or two people who do everything between appointments. The phone is the only tool truly at hand at the moment the information exists — after the service, after a visit, in the car.
